Know Your Rights.

Have you ever wonder what to do in case you get pulled over by a border patrol officer or ICE agent? The following are the Top Five things you need to remember:

1) Remain Silent: Show the officer your driver's license. (or your identification if you are do not have a driver’s license) If requested, show your car registration and proof of insurance. But you still have the right to remain silent about everything else. Immigration can use anything you say against you. You have the right to refuse to consent to a search of yourself or your car.

2) Remain calm and don't run: Use your phone to record discreetly but stay calm and don't run.

3) Ask to speak to your attorney: If you are detained, DO NOT sign any documents. If you do not know what the number of your lawyer is, call a family member so that they can contact your representative.

4) Think twice before you sign anything: Do not sign any document that you do not understand or do not want to sign. In many instances immigration might ask you to sign a volunteer departure order or deportation order, without any explanation. You have the right to speak to a lawyer, before you sign anything.

5) An arrest is not equivalent to a deportation: Please remember that being detained by ICE does not mean that you will be deported. You have the right to request a bond hearing, and possibly be released. Even if the judge denies bond, you may fight your immigration case while in detention.
