What It Takes to Become a U.S. Citizen

Most lawful permanent residents can apply for citizenship once they have lived in the U.S. for at least 5 years. For those who are married to U.S. citizens, the requirement is 3 years.

Other requirements include that you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have resided at your residence for at least 3 months in the state where you apply
  • Be a person of good moral character
  • Have lived continuously in the U.S. for at least 5 years prior to your application
  • Have been continuously present in the U.S. for at least 30 months of the 5-year residency requirement
  • Have a basic skill in reading, writing, and speaking English
  • Have learned the basics of U.S. history and government
  • Agree with the U.S. Constitution

The naturalization process involves:

  • Demonstrating your eligibility
  • Preparing and submitting your application form with all supporting documentation
  • Completing a criminal background check
  • Fingerprinting and photographing
  • Attending an interview with a USCIS official
  • Waiting for your official notice as to whether you have been granted citizenship
